Rogers Firefighters Prepare for Disaster

Rogers firefighters prepared for the worst Wednesday, with some help from local students.

The department is training for a mass casualty situation, and students from Northwest Arkansas Community College played the victims of a bus accident with multiple injuries.

"It's a lot better to have people on the ground that you're trying to treat," says Battalion Chief Eddie Thompson. "Even though their injuries aren't real you can still get an idea of what you're doing and you know hands on."

Thompson says the scenario taxes resources, making organization more important.

"It goes all the way up from medics on the ground treating the patient, to fire companies trying to triage and get everybody sorted out, all the way up to incident command that handles the whole scene," he says. "We try to make it as realistic as possible that way in the event of a true emergency... we're better prepared for the event."

Although we haven't had an incident like this here yet, firefighters say with XNA interstate five forty and the potential for tornadoes, it's a definite possibility.

"We've got the potential for it we just haven't had one yet," Thompson says.  "That's a good thing."
