Rogers School Receives Shade Trees

By: Kyle Leyenberger
Updated: October 25, 2012
The Arkansas Forestry Commission planted shade trees at a Rogers elementary school Thursday.

Mathias Elementary received five trees as part of STOP, or Shade Trees On Playgrounds.

The grant program aims to raise awareness and prevent skin cancer using nature to block the sun. The tree planting portion was rained out, but the kids still celebrated inside with songs and readings about trees.

"It's going to really benefit generations of Mathias students, from here on out," says assistant principal Korienne Toney. "As the trees grow and provide more shade then there's just a place to come in out of the heat."

The kids have also been studying trees leading up to the event, and teachers hope it will instill pride of ownership, so the children will help take care of the new plants.
