Growth Causes Fayetteville to Propose Plan for Wedington Community

"This is the fourth one of these events that we've done in Fayetteville, and the other three neighborhoods where we have done these have seen a tremendous amount of benefit."
An introduction to improvements that could possibly be coming soon to Wedington Drive.
"Twenty percent of the city of Fayetteville's population lives in what we call the Wedington influence area, the area that uses this Wedington corridor for goods and services," says Peter Nierengarten, who works for the city's development and planning department.Thursday night city officials proposed the beginnings of a plan that would, in a sense, revitalize the area.
"I think we'll develop some guiding principles that will help us," says city council member Rhonda Adams.
The presentation showed a photographic timeline, illustrating just how much growth Wedington has seen in the past couple decades. "It seemed to be just kind of organizing and giving a history of this area," says Barbara Wright, who attended the kick-off event and has lived in Fayetteville for more than 12 years. "I'm not surprised because they've done it in other neighborhoods and areas, i think it's a good thing to get input from people who live here already."
Issues addressed include land use, accessibility, and of course, traffic. "The fact that it's not the most friendly place to bicycle or walk," Nierengarten says about the area. "It's very, very important and very special to me, I think we do a great job in this city of inviting input,"
Adams says. "Come together to talk, it certainly makes it easier to make those long term plans."
Plans that paint a picture for what's to come on that other end of the Wedington timeline.
"I think people will look back and say, 'Wow, well done Fayetteville,'" Adams says.
