The Arkansas Medical Marijuana Act could benefit Arkansas financially.

If it passes, the Arkansas Department of Health estimates about 45,000 people would benefit from medical marijuana.

According to "Arkansans for Compassionate Care," that means the Natural State stands to make $10 million a year in new sales tax revenue.

The group says its research shows the Medical Marijuana Act would also bring 500 new jobs to the state.

Arkansans for Compassionate Care issued a press release this week, stating that the Arkansas Department of Health has also indicated the initial startup costs for the program will be between $3.3 million and $6.4 million

According to the press release, that will be paid for by cardholder and license fees.

After the initial startup fees are recovered, the entire program will be revenue neutral.
