Animal Shelter Celebrates Halloween with Free Adoption Day

Families celebrated Halloween with much more than candy this year.
"You're adding a valued member to your family, bringing some love into your home as well as saving a life," said Tony Rankin with Fayetteville Animal Services.
Folks filled out adoption applications at the Fayetteville Animal Shelter and, if approved, they found a furry friend to take home for free!
"We're waiving all our fees. The dogs and cats will get all the same services as usual so they'd be spayed or neutered, micro chipped, and up to date on shots," said Justine Lentz with Fayetteville Animal Services.
Saving a shelter animal helps keep the euthanasia rate down. In the last few years, Rankin said their rate has dropped by 30-percent.
"Adopting an animal from us means they're going out the front door instead of unfortunately having to be euthanized... Definitely one of the reasons why our euthanasia rate over the last three years has dropped dramatically is because we've instituted free adoption days."
But a pet is not to perfect a Halloween costume. Adopting an animal is a commitment and the shelter is making sure everyone does it for the right reasons.
"If we can tell that they're adopting it for an irresponsible reason then we'll counsel them away from the adoption... Our staff is trained to ask the right questions and make sure that it's going to be a good home," said Ranking.
Bentley Etches was at the shelter searching for a dog. She adopted a cat a few years ago, and was looking for a friend for her feline.
"It's very important to understand the responsibilities that come with it and it's not just like a toy it's someone that's part of your family."
And rescuing a loved one at no cost is definitely a treat. The shelter considered the event a success, with twelve animals finding forever homes!
