Rodeo of the Ozarks celebrated Springdale's "original cowboy" Thursday night at a sold out event.

Sandy Boone will be 90 in February, and people in the city say he's done wonders for his hometown.

"I was born right here," Boone says, sitting in his Springdale office, surrounded by pictures of family and the city he loves.

Boone grew up with Springdale, and he says it's changed as much or more than any other town in Arkansas. Boone's grandfather was one of the city's first realtors, and his father had an apple orchard. After a stint in the military, Boone returned home, and immediately threw his hat into the effort to help it grow, starting with Maple Drive.

"I poured every sack of cement in a hand mixer to pour that street," he says.  "I planted all those trees and I watered 'em for two years with a five gallon bucket in the back of my car."

The Springdale Kiwanis club organized the event to thank the man for all his years of service. Boone's been a member for 66 years.

And the mayor of Springdale named November 15 Sandy Boone day, to thank Boone for all he's done for the community.
