Tis the season for giving, and Tuesday is a special day to kick it off.

It's called #GivingTuesday, and it's designed to make sure people remember to give to those in need.

"We have Black Friday, Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday... How about a day for giving back?" says Jody Dilday, the executive director of the Single Parent Scholarship Fund of Northwest Arkansas. "So Giving Tuesday was created so that as we start the holiday season, we're not just giving gifts to ourselves and to our loved ones, but giving back to our communities."

Whether it's money, time, awareness or some other type of support, non profits across the country and Northwest Arkansas just hope you'll give back on Tuesday, November 27.

At the Single Parent Scholarship Fund of Northwest Arkansas, even those getting help are quick to pay it forward.

"When our students graduate and have earned their degrees and go out and get great paying jobs in the community, they turn right around and give back to this organization that helped them along the way," Dilday says. "They're helping students like themselves, but they're also setting an example for their children to follow, so really the ripple effect is just enormous."

New York's 92nd Street Y has been the catalyst and incubator for #GivingTuesday.

The United Nations Foundation joined as partners, and a powerful list of corporations and non-profits agreed to be founding partners as well, helping spread the word and committing to their own #GivingTuesday initiatives.

But what really matters is YOU. #GivingTuesday relies on people everywhere playing their part to make it a real success.

"We really hope that next year and the year after, there will be as big of news stories about Giving Tuesday as there are about Black Friday," Dilday says.
