Bankrate.com is offering up these simple tips to protect your identity this holiday season.
First, if you're shopping with an online merchant for the first time, be sure to look for the Trust-e symbol or a Better Business Bureau online seal. Both of those mean the seller has been audited and deemed trustworthy.
Make sure any online credit card charges are handled through a secure site.
You'll know you're on a secure site if the web address begins with https instead of the usual http.
Only shop on web sites that offer a privacy policy so you know how your personal information will be handled.
You can even print out privacy policies and other important information just in case.
And finally, make sure your anti-virus and anti-spyware software is up to date.
They'll help you avoid "phishers" looking to steal your info.
