The city of Springdale has some serious cash to spend after closing on more than $70 million in bonds.
The bonds were approved in August to pay for parks, streets and new fire stations. Mayor Doug Sprouse says now, with the cash in hand, the city is working to iron out the details.
"Springdale's certainly been growing," Sprouse says. "We've got some catching up to do in some areas, and I'm excited that our citizens recognized that."
Sprouse says the lion's share of the money, $45 million, is slated for street improvements including an interchange at 540 and Don Tyson Parkway.
"That is the number one priority roadwise for our city right now," he says.
The city is also buying up land for the Parks and Recreation Department.
"We are going to add two large parks to the city, a total of almost 200 acres," he says. "We're hoping we can get both new parks fully developed."
The land in Southeast Springdale will be developed first, and the city will fix up some older parks before working on the second park to the North.
The bonds will also pay for three new fire stations.
"A couple of our smaller older stations, stations 2 and 3 will be replaced," Sprouse says. "It will eliminate the overlap in coverage we have right now and give us better coverage."
The third, all new station 7, could be built on either the East or West side of town.
"We actually need a station 8 too, but we aren't sure we can cover that with this bond issue," Sprouse says.
The city is interviewing construction managers and architects for those projects now, and Sprouse wants the public to help him decide exactly where the new stations should be.
On Monday, Springdale plans to host two public input sessions Monday, December 10 at the City Hall Council Chambers. The sessions run from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.
