December National Fruitcake Month

By: Amanda Ashley
Updated: December 6, 2012
It's time to celebrate the gag-gift of the cake world.

Shouldn't come as too big a surprise that December is national fruitcake month - when else could it be really?

A whole 31 days dedicated to the admiration of the nut and candied fruit culinary concoction. You can blame, or credit, the ancient Romans for the invention of the fruitcake.

The first known recipe included pomegranate seeds, raisins and pine nuts.  Traditional fruitcakes were soaked in brandy to preserve them and prevent mold, though most mass-produced fruitcakes don't come with alcohol these days.
