Fayetteville's Advertising and Promotion Commission will chip in on a new performing arts center at the University of Arkansas.

A&P commissioners voted Monday to give the U of A $500,000 in two installments, to help pay for a state of the art performance hall.

"We're grateful and we're going to build one of the best facilities that can be imagined," says Chancellor David Gearhart. "It's going to be awesome for the city of Fayetteville, for the people of this region, and we're excited about it."

The $17 million renovation will turn the university's old field house into a 600 seat auditorium.

A&P Executive Director Marilyn Heifner says more than 200 performances each year will draw visitors to Fayetteville.

"They'll be able to bring people from out of town," she says. "The commissions goal is that too, to bring in people to stay in hotels and to eat in the restaurants."

Heifner says the new facility will also free up more time slots at the Walton Arts Center.

"It's kind of a win win situation for the commission," she says.

The renovation is expected to start next year, and should take less than two years to complete.
