New Privacy Law Takes Effect January 1

The new privacy law takes effect January 1, 2007. The new law also prohibits the transmission of a social security number over the Internet unless that information has been encrypted. According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, residents in 32 states will face a host of new state laws when the new year begins. The new state laws run the gamut of issues. New Mexico has started a DNA database, and Rhode Island now requires health plans to cover smoking cessation programs (Copyright 2006 Newsroom Solutions, LLC)
