State Name Dropping?

By:
Updated: April 17, 2007
Newly elected State Representative Dan Greenberg filed the proposal Wednesday....he says naming buildings and streets after living people is "somewhat distasteful." If you travel around Northwest Arkansas, you don`t have to go far to find landmarks named after people who are still alive. There`s the Bobby Hopper Tunnel on Interstate 5-40...and a portion of 5-40 itself is named after former Congressman John Paul Hammerschmidt..who is still living. Then there`s the Harrison post office, which now bears Hammerschmidt`s name as well. But a new proposal could change the way the state names future landmarks. State Representative Greenberg says he filed the Edifice Complex Prevention Act because "...we`re building temples to people that are living," he says. Greenberg says the act would only apply to tax-payer funded landmarks and not affect anything already named. He says the act isn`t aimed at any particular party or person, he feels it`s a "...bi-partisan problem at all levels of government."
