Hobby Lobby Appreciation Day Draws Support of Mike Huckabee

Some folks across the country headed to Hobby Lobby on Saturday as part of "Hobby Lobby Appreciation Day", a concept that started with former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee.

The event was an effort to show support for the Oklahoma-based chain in their fight with the federal government over an Affordable Car Act mandate requiring employee insurance plans include birth control coverage.

Back in August, Huckabee promoted a similar event at Chick-Fil-A restaurants when the business was criticized for its owner's backing of anti-gay-marriage causes.  On Thursday, Huckabee announced his support of the Hobby Lobby event on his Facebook page and website asking people to shop the stores on January 5th.

Starting this year businesses would be responsible for daily fines for not complying with the new healthcare mandates. Hobby Lobby has publicly rejected the requirement to pay for some types of birth control that the owners say violate their religious beliefs.

The company, which has 500 stores including locations in Fayetteville, Rogers and Fort Smith, has filed a lawsuit challenging the mandate. In December, Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor denied Hobby Lobby's emergency request to block enforcement of the mandate.
