The largest retailer in the world-waging a war on veteran unemployment.

"If you have served and sacrificed for our country you shouldn't have to fight for a job at home," says Gary Profit a Retired Army Brigadier General, and Walmart's Senior Director of Military Programs

The Veterans Welcome Home Commitment is part of a plan to jump-start a slow economy.

And they're starting with the unemployment rate of our hometown heroes by promising a job to any honorably discharged veteran in his or her first 12 months off active duty

"What we find though when people have to reintegrate with families and communities and make that transition is that it's facilitated when they can replace that sense of purpose and mission that they found in uniform with a job and a career and that's where we think we can make the greatest impact," says Profit.

But it's not just a feel good pledge.

"They have been tested in one of the most difficult crucibles of life and so they have the discipline and the skills and capabilities leadership that we seek in good Walmart associates."

Traits that have been with the company, since the very beginning.

"We've been on this journey since Sam Walton, Captain US Army Intelligence, a little over 50 years ago."

A small store, now responsible for more than 1.4 million American jobs, with a goal to employ 100,000 veterans in the next five years.

"This is about an American economic renewal and we think they can be the same contribution that was made by the dough boys after World War I."

It's a mission Walmart hopes other retailers will latch onto..

"We think that it would be great if we could have an aspirational goal of reducing the veteran unemployment rate by 50%."

Walmart is rolling it out the initiative on Memorial Day, May 27th.

And if you're interesting in applying, the company has a special website for veterans. careerswithamission.com.
