Fort Smith Police say a 7-year-old boy was taken to the hospital after being hit by a truck around 6pm Wednesday.

The boy was playing with a ball in his yard when it apparently was kicked out into the street, according to police, and when he went to go get the ball a truck hit him.

He was transported to Sparks Hospital for treatment of several broken ribs on the right side of his body, according to reports. He was then transferred to Children's Hospital in Little Rock as a precaution, say police.

Witnesses told police the hit and run vehicle was a newer model, dark colored SUV, possibly a Chevy Tahoe. One witness said the vehicle possibly had a white stripe or sticker along the top of the rear of the vehicle. No further description was available and the witnesses did not see a tag.

Police say that around 9pm the 17 year-old driver of the vehicle arrived at the police department along with his parents.

He told officers he was driving down North 5th Street on his way to church when he felt his vehicle collide with something. He said he drove to the Sonic on Midland and discovered damage to the front of his vehicle. He then went to church and told his parents that he had hit something. His parents contacted the police department and brought him in to give a statement.

He denied knowing what he had hit.

The juvenile was charged with felony Leaving the Scene of an Injury Accident and booked into the Sebastian County Detention Center.
