A University of Arkansas at Fort Smith student has been arrested after bringing a handgun on campus.

According to the school, university police arrested 23-year-old Brett Ward of Greenwood around noon on Wednesday.

UAFS officers got a tip and took the student out of class and placed him into custody. The school says Ward admitted to officers he did have a gun in his possession during the previous day's class and again on Wednesday.

Officers took Ward's 9 mm Glock.

UAFS Chancellor Dr. Paul B. Beran said there was no danger to students, faculty or staff at any time.

"We are serious about the safety and welfare of those on our campus," said Beran.

"UPD acted within their authority as sworn officers for the state of Arkansas and will do so at any time, not only to promote safety on campus but to comply with state laws."

The law specific to university campuses is A.C.A. 5-73-306, which prohibits a concealed handgun "...on any school, college, community college or university campus or building..."
