The city of Fayetteville is celebrating the successful cleanup of hazardous chemicals from the site of an abandoned factory.

The field at 2000 Pump Station Road was once home to the R & P Electroplating facility, and when the business closed it left behind tons of hazardous solvents and chemicals, including cyanides, oils, and acids.

The Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality demolished the old plant, and removed the soil, grated and reseeded to completely clean up the property.

Now the city plans to install a trail and pavilion so people can enjoy the park land.

"Just look at it it's beautiful," says ADEQ spokesperson Katherine Benenati."The ultimate goal is to have something that is an asset to the community instead of an eyesore."

The $2.6 million clean up is part of the Arkansas Brownfields Program, which has helped restore 30 properties across the state.
