The group, one of the nation's largest youth organizations, has long banned openly gay scouts and scout leaders, including troops right here in Northwest Arkansas.
Now, the Boy Scouts' board of directors is considering removing the ban from the national organization's rules.
That would leave the decision of whether to admit gay scouts up to the sponsoring organizations of local troops.
If the national policy change is approved, it could be announced as early as next week.
Scout leaders decided to re-examine the ban at the urging of local scout chapters.
