USPS to End Saturday Mail Delivery

By: Charles Frazier
Updated: February 6, 2013
The United States Postal Service announced Wednesday changes in its delivery schedule that include discontinuing mail deliveries on Saturdays.

According to a press release, the changes will take effect during the week of Aug. 5, 2013.
Package delivers will continue six days a week, Monday through Saturday.

It's making the changes as an effort to save costs that they estimate would amount to approximately $2 billion annually once the plan is fully in place.

Patrick R. Donahoe, Postmaster General and CEO says, "The Postal Service is advancing an important new approach to delivery that reflects the strong growth of our package business and responds to the financial realities resulting from America's changing mailing habits. We developed this approach by working with our customers to understand their delivery needs and by identifying creative ways to generate significant cost savings."

The Postal Service has considered making the change to a five-day delivery schedule for several years but the strong demand for package delivery six days a week prompted it to reconsider and maintain package deliveries on Saturdays.

Mail addressed to P.O. Boxes will also continue to be delivered on Saturdays and Post Offices that are open on Saturdays will remain so.

The Postal Service says it's announcing this decision six months in advance of the changes taking effect so that people have time to plan and adjust accordingly.
