Program Allows Inside Look at Police Work

By: Tyler Thomason

"You're participating in it, you're learning."

A police officer perspective.

Something that's a unique opportunity for the citizens of Rogers.

"What we do is we try to present to the community exactly what it is that we do here at the police department," says Keith Foster of Rogers P.D.

Citizen's Academy is scheduled to begin in April, but applications are being accepted now.

It's free, and allows folks to find out what its really like behind the wheel of a patrol car.

Or behind an earpiece at the dispatch center.

"I'm going to take you outside, and I'm going to let you actually do a traffic stop," Foster says.

"We'll set up a mock crime scene."

And in the past the program has proved to be pretty successful.

"One of the first citizen's police academy's that we did, one of the people that went through that, he actually works for us now," Foster says.

He says the 10 week course includes both a hands-on approach as well as lecture-style learning.

It's all in an effort to connect with community, and allow a realistic view into what all goes on behind the badge.

"You see a lot of stuff in Hollywood that's not necessarily true," Foster says.

"So, I want to put some of the truth to it."
