SURPRISE, Ariz. - Arkansas starter Trey Killian struck out nine and only allowed two runs on three hits in 6.1 innings, but his strong outing was not enough as Arizona State defeated the Razorbacks, 3-1, on Saturday night at Surprise Stadium.
Arkansas drops to 7-4 with the loss, while Arizona State improves to 7-2 with the win.
Killian, a true freshman from Mountain Home, Ark., was outstanding on the mound for the third straight outing, but took the loss. The right hander struck out a career-high nine batters and only allowed two runs on three hits in 6.1 innings. After allowing a single and double in the second, Killian proceeded to set down the next 16 batters he faced, with eight of the outs being via strikeout.
Colby Suggs struck out two and did not allow a hit in 1.1 innings out of the Razorback bullpen.
Arizona State reliever Alex Blackford (1-0) earned his first win of the season. Blackford struck out all three batters he retired in his only inning of work. Ryan Burr worked two perfect innings to earn his second save of the season.
ASU starter Ryan Kellogg did not factor into the decision after allowing a run on six hits and striking out three in six innings.
Tyler Spoon led Arkansas at the plate with a pair of hits. Spoon extended his hitting streak to 11 games and recorded his fourth multi-hit game of the season. Joe Serrano drove in Arkansas' only run of the night and went 1-for-4 at the plate.
Trevor Allen had two hits and scored two runs to lead the Sun Devils at the plate. Nathaniel Causey and Jake Peevyhouse each had a hit and a RBI for Arizona State.
ASU struck first, scoring a run in the second. Allen led off the inning with a single and Causey followed with a double to right field to score Allen from first base.
The Razorbacks tied the game with a run in the top of the fifth. With two outs, Matt Vinson grounded a double down the right field line. Serrano then lined a single to right-center field, scoring Vinson from second base to tie the game.
Arizona State broke a 1-1 tie with two runs in the bottom of the seventh. With one out, Allen laid down a bunt to the left of the mound. Killian fielded, but his throw to first was low and got past first baseman Jacob Mahan, allowing Allen to reach second. Mahan tried to throw Allen out at second, but his throw got past shortstop Brett McAfee and went into left field with Allen advancing to third. A wild pitch scored Allen to put ASU in front 2-1. Michael Benjamin then singled with two out and Peevyhouse doubled to the right-center field gap to score Benjamin and give the Sun Devils a 3-1 lead.
Arkansas was unable to get anything going in the eighth or ninth innings as Arizona State claimed the 3-1 win.
Arkansas closes play in the Coca-Cola Classic tomorrow at 11 a.m. (CT) against Pacific. The Razorbacks will start senior left hander Randall Fant, who will be making his season debut. Pacific will counter with sophomore righty Michael Benson (2-0, 1.32).
