Army Corps of Engineers: two levees unacceptable

The White River Levees stretching from Augusta to Clarendon, as well as the Conway County Levee District No. 8 in Atkins both made the Corp`s list, issued Thursday.
According to the Corps of Engineers, an unacceptable rating means a levee has one or more problems that could prevent the project from functioning as designed. Examples include erosion, tree growth and faulty culvert conditions.
The Corps inspects some 2,000 levee units, or 13,000 miles on an annual basis, including projects built and maintained by the Corps; projects built by the Corps and transferred to a local owner to operate and maintain; and non-federal projects built by a local community.
After conducting the inspections, local Corps District offices review the results with the local levee owner responsible for operations and maintenance. The Corps is ensuring the levee owner understands the deficiencies and the consequences if not corrected.
