Fort Smith Northside/Southside Coaches Vying For A 6th Championship Ring Friday

When Fort Smith Northside faces Fort Smith Southside in the
7A state championship for girl's high school basketball Friday, both head
coaches will be seeking their 6 state championship ring.
Ricky Smith won 4
straight state titles with Fort Smith Northside from 1999 to 2002 and again in
2007. This group of Northside seniors
has played in the past two state championship games, losing last year to Cabot
and the previous season to Fayetteville in triple overtime.
Southside coach Sherry White is making her first
championship appearance with the lady Rebels, but she won 4 titles at Harrison
in 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2004, she also coached Hot Springs to a state championship
in 1990.
Fort Smith Northside and Fort Smith Southside played each
other for the state championship in 2001 in Pine Bluff; Northside won that game
45-38. Northside and Southside have also
squared off in the state title game in boy's basketball in 1968, and in
Football twice in back to back seasons in 1987 and 1988.
Northside and Southside are also even in number of girls
basketball state championships with 5 each.
