Fayetteville Cops Fight to Stay Cool

The heat continues in Northwest Arkansas.

All of us know how hot it is, but few are forced to work outside wearing dark blue head-to-toe with 25 pounds of equipment.

Still Fayetteville cops say they have some ways to beat the heat.

Take into account the extra heat from the car, the pavement, and don't forget that bullet proof vest.

"It is how it is, you know you're going to be out here, you know you're going to be sweaty, it's just part of the job," says Sgt. Mike Key. He says water is his weapon in the battle against the heat wave.

"I drink lots of water, get a lot of liquids in. I stop periodically, get out and stretch my legs, just to get moving."

And the toughest part is that what's supposed to keep police officers safe, is only working against them.

"We're out here wrestling around sometimes, going through the bursh, jumping barbed wire fence, stuff like that. A lot of safety issues, so we have to have that leg protection," says Key.

But it's also keeping them hot. Sergeant Keys says that's where the baby powder comes in.

"It's just when it's really hot like this right now, gold bond, that's definitely down the vest, front and back and everything, you just gotta be coated in it, it just helps us stay cool." And

Sgt. Key says even being a Fayetteville native doesn't help.

"I'm used to it, still doesn't mean it doesn't hurt," says Key.

Either way he's counting the day til cooler temperatures.

"68 degrees... That would be perfect."

And Sgt. Key says while it's important to take care of himself in the heat - he also keeps his eye out for folks in the community.

Driving through parks and checking on people walking are just a couple things officers do during these hot days.
