No place is more grief-stricken over the death of Andy Griffith than his birthplace of Mount Airy, North Carolina, the inspiration for the fictional Mayberry of his legendary television show.

The Griffith Museum here is where family released the statement confirming his death Tuesday morning at his home on the North Carolina Outer Banks and, oddly, that he had already been laid to rest.

"Mr. Griffith died in his home, peacefully and he has been laid to rest on his beloved Roanoke Island," said Dare County Sheriff Doug Doughtie.

Wife Cindi was at his side and in a separate statement said "Andy was a person of incredibly strong Christian faith and was prepared for the day he would be called home to his lord."

In Hollywood, where all 249 episodes of the show were recorded, there's a makeshift memorial on his star on the walk of fame.

Ron Howard, who played TV son wrote a tweet that praised Griffith's pursuit of excellence.

Even President Obama weighed in with a statement that said "Andy was beloved by generations and revered by entertainers who followed in his footsteps."

Although his career also included standup, radio, movies and music, it was his role as "America's Sheriff" that'll live on, if only just in reruns.
