Harber High School students spent Friday learning just how dangerous texting and driving can be, but the message was actually put together by a group of students.

Sophomore Wade Doss grew up texting, and when he started driving he didn't think anything of sending a message while on the road.

"I was like 'I'm never going to get in a wreck,' and 'nothing will ever happen to me,'" he says.

But when Doss joined the school's Environmental and Spatial Technology program, his group decided to create a documentary about the dangers of distracted driving.

"We noticed it was a large problem just in society in general," says group member Wil Church. "Drivers who are texting are obnoxious, and dangerous and they endanger themselves and everyone around them."

The students  interviewed their school resource officer, as well as a woman who lost her daughter to distracted driving.

Doss says it was a life changing experience, and it opened his eyes to the dangers of texting behind the wheel.

"It hit my heart, and made me change my mind about texting and driving," he says.

After months of hard work, the kids debuted their video Friday, alongside a texting and driving simulator and guest speakers brought in to reinforce the movie's message.

"When you text and drive it's not a matter of if you get into an accident, it's a matter of when," Church says.

Doss hopes the documentary will convince others to follow his lead.

"I won't do it any more after being on this project and learning about it," he says. "We solve problems in the community and it's changed my life lot."
