Updated: April 17, 2007
Thomas, 54, served 29 years with the Searcy Police Department, including more than 17 years as chief. A graduate of the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia, Thomas is a past president of both the FBI National Academy Association of Arkansas and the Arkansas Association of Chiefs of Police. In 1989, Governor Bill Clinton appointed Thomas to the Arkansas Crime Information Center Board. Governor Mike Huckabee would later appoint Thomas to the Arkansas Commission on Law Enforcement Standards in 2001. As Director of the Tobacco Control Board, Thomas will oversee the regulation and enforcement of tobacco laws in Arkansas, many of which ensure that Arkansas continues to receive yearly payments from tobacco companies under the Master Settlement Agreement reached in 1998.
