The death of the blue angels pilot was a loss for the entire military community, but a personal loss for me. In March of last year, I was a reporter at a TV station in Arizona. During the winter months, the Blue Angels would come out to the desert to train for the great flying weather. I had the opportunity to go up with the Blue Angels, and Lt. Cmdr, Kevin Davis, the 32 year old pilot killed in the South Carolina crash, was my pilot.
Lt. Kevin davis was described as always ready. He was an 11-year U.S. Navy veteran. In my experience flying with him on a flight for the media, Davis was fun loving and happy go lucky when we were out of the jet - .... but once inside his "office" as he called it, he was all business.
This time last year, Davis was responsible for taking celebrities - like Kelly Clarkson, Tiger Woods, and others on these once in a lifetime rides in the legendary jets. He was very excited about becoming an airshow pilot within the next year....but this day he was sure to show me a great time.
Unlike his predecessors - some show pilots enjoyed to make the reporter sick... But not Davis... He was the ultimate professional and was not out to make me sick.
Others describe him as very humble. He told me numerous times how much he loved his job, and how he would not want to do anything else. He was a graduate of the Navys fighter weapons school -- made popular in the movie "Top Gun" ... He became a demonstration pilot this year. This was his first air show.....Cut short so tragically.
