Police are searching for a man they believed raped two elderly women in Fort Smith. The most recent victim was sleeping in her home, when she woke up to find a man on top of her. The victim, a 55-year-old woman, was raped on N. 37th Street over the weekend. Police believe the same man may have raped another woman who lives nearby on N. 31st Street a few weeks ago.
Wendall Sampson, from the Fort Smith Police Department, explains, “Its someone thats out in the early morning hours. It’s someone that either works a late night shift or doesnt work at all. It may be someone thats involved in drug activity, alcohol, or something of that nature who would be out at that time of night or that time of morning and would be looking for victims who are elderly who he thinks he can overpower."
The most recent victim told police her attacker broke through her window. She says she fought back, and bit him all the way to the bone.
Sampson says, "he may suffer from pretty deep bite wounds on his hand."
One of the victim’s acquaintances, Regina Anderson, says she hopes police find the rapist. Anderson says, "The only thing that I can say is I wish you well, and I hope they find the guy that did this to you and to the other person too, I really do."
Police say they are looking for a black male with injuries to his hands or forearms. They say he has a medium build, and longer hair. If you have any information about the case, you’re asked to contact the Fort Smith Police.
