Governor Mike Beebe wants a new $18.4 million grant to help needy college students in Arkansas. “Go” Opportunities Grant is Arkansas’ first strictly need-based grant. To qualify, the student’s family must have an income of $25,000 or less. Governor Beebe says, “It is designed for students from limited-income families and those kids whose light bulbs did not come on until they were juniors or seniors. Others may simply not test well, and yet, they can do the college coursework and should be given the opportunity to do so.” Alan Pixley, the Director of Financial Aid at the University of Arkansas in Fort Smith, explains, "It is still important for everybody to increase their education level, not just those that are of great means, or that are able to obtain that education." Pixley also says this grant will really help Fort Smith’s first generation college students. Some other requirements are that you must be a US citizen, you must live in Arkansas, and you must have either graduated high school or completed your GED in Arkansas.
