Tyson already harvests around 2.3 billion pounds of animal fat each year. The company says the fat could be converted into around 300 million gallons of fuel. As for how Tyson will do that, the company plans to make capital improvements this summer. Conoco Phillips will begin preparing its refineries to process that fuel. The companies plan to start actual fuel production late this year, and continue to ramp up production through the spring of 2009. Neither company has said what plants they plan to use for the fuel.
