Superbowl Violence

By:
Updated: April 17, 2007
This sunday the Steelers and the Seahawks will play each other in the superbowl. Many fans get excited about the big game, but that`s not always a good thing. Officials at the Peace At Home shelter say the highs and lows of the game can lead to violent situations in some households. Football fans are ready to watch some intense competition and excitement this weekend, but the shelter says a study by the University of Indiana Bloomington points out an alarming problem. According to `Televised NFL Games and Domestic Violence: A Fourteen City Study,` the point spread of a game contributes more to violent incidents than the actual outcome of the game. "They studied fourteen cities with nfl franchises and they found that after game day, about three days afterwards that domestic violence calls rose about 244 cases on average," says Cody Ford, Communication Outreach Coordinator with the shelter. Although many fans celebrate game day with alcohol, Ford says alcohol is just an excuse. "It isn`t related to alcohol, it isn`t related to the competition, it`s just another excuse and there is no excuse for abuse." Peace At Home says it will track incidences to see exactly what the connection between the superbowl and domestic violence is locally. Shelter officials feel education and awareness are the best ways to prevent domestic violence.
