For L.A. Reid, mentoring the boys is taking the music executive back to his early days in the industry.
"I've historically made records to actually put on performances," explains Reid. "I haven't done that in over twenty five years, so to oversee performances at this level, I am not actually in my comfort level at all."
And just like the performers who they mentor, each song, each production takes a lot out of the judges.
"I put in the hours," says Abdul. "I worked 12-15 hours seven days a week. I haven't had a day off."
