The price of oil got closer to $68 dollars a barrel -- and we saw initial jobless claims go down last week. Investors worry that the rising price of oil and gas could set off a round of inflation.
Those worries resulted in the Dow losing -23.05 (-0.21%) to close at 11,216.50. The NASDAQ added +1.42 (+0.06%) to finish at 2,361.17 and the S&P 500 lost -2.52 (-0.19%) to finish at 1,309.04.
Stocks of local interest essentially split the session. Tyson Foods (TSN) lost -1.12% to close at $13.26. JB Hunt (JBHT) added +0.71% to close at $22.85. Acxiom (ACXM) added +1.23% to close at $26.44. Wal-Mart (WMT) lost -0.66% to finish at $46.56 and AllTel (AT) lost -0.06% to finish at $64.96.
Today, we`ll see March payroll figures and the March unemployment rate. Also out -- wholesale inventories for February and consumer credit for the same month. Earnings today include numbers from Wal-Mart Mexico.
Overseas in Asia last night the Nikkei lost -28.77 (-0.2%) to reach 17,460.56 at the mid-day break in Tokyo -- the broader Topix lost -1.55 (-0.1%) to finish at 1,774.12.
Back in the U.S., in extended hours trading, the NASDAQ 100 Afterhours Indicator rose +0.85 (+0.05%) to close the night at 1,740.05.
