Champions For Kids and the UofA Athletic Department teamed up to raise money to help youth programs that are either under funded or not funded at all.
RazorFest kicked off around 10:00 am with a pep rally. Families had over 20 different activities to choose from. Concerts, games, rides, and giveaways proved to be a great time for the young and old alike. One of the favorites, though, was the slide. "It`s a lot of fun and you can go real fast on there!" one boy says. "It`s really fast and I caught some air and I came slamming down... it was awesome!" another girl says.
Kids also enjoyed the Red and White Game. "Me and my brother have been watching some football... the red team- they won today."
Parents like Lanie Hines says she was working double time with her kids. "They were doing good until the cotton candy hit the blood stream- it was all over!"
RazorFest organizers say over 30,000 people turned out for the event. Becky Luttrell works with Kid Care, a non profit that provides after school opportunities for local kids. She says she couldn`t be happier with todays turn-out. "We wanted it to be this way... it`s a bigger than life project for most of us, and to see it come together and happen the way it has-- has been overwhelmingly exciting."
Like Kid Care, six other organizations will benefit from RazorFest, including the American Red Cross and Bethany Christian Services. Luttrell says the hard work was worth it. "My role as an event coordinator for all of this has been background work so that I could come and just sit and watch this... that`s what makes my heart smile-- and know that the kids get the benefit from it all."
Thousands of kids are turned away every day because youth programs don`t have the resources, and organizers say this was a fun way for the community to give back.
