Gas Prices: Pain At The Pump

By:
Updated: April 17, 2007
Gas use has fallen 0.6% a new report says that`s because high gas prices are causing people to use less. "I didn`t notice. I need gas, so I just pump it, look at it, and say ouch!" You may have noticed a hike at the pump, or maybe by now, you`re just used to it. According to AAA, while gas use has fallen, the average price of regular gas is 27% more expensive than last year. "It costs me $80 two weeks ago to fill up. It`s making it hard on everybody," says Becky Byrd. Analysts say cutting back could cause those prices to drop dramatically. But local drivers say, thats easier said than done. "It`s not like vacation time. Most of what`s going on now is back and forth to work...you know, everyday family life, " says Byrd. "I don`t think that`s realistic. How are they suppose to get to work?" says Stephen Ryan Chyrchel. And people like Chyrchel are changing their plans. "I`m not driving as much, that`s for sure. I`ve had to cancel a few trips because of the situation." So whats the reason for the hike? A few factors come into play, including disruption in supply from the Middle East and Venezuela, increasing demand from China, and Hurricanes Katrina and Rita- which took a number of refineries out of production. But history shows as long as gas is available, Americans adjust to the price, regardless of the price. "People still have to drive, they still have to get to work, and they still have to go fishing... it`s the summer!" says Justin Brasher. The current national average is $2.74 a gallon. In Fayetteville, the cheapest gas we found is at Murphy USA on Mall Avenue for $2.72.
