Major Kate Williams was deployed with the Nebraska National Guard to eastern Afghanistan. Her mission was to train local farmers and government officials and link the two groups together.
"It's exciting in the fact that you have an opportunity to work with the locals and that's one of the most rewarding aspects," Williams says.
Williams knows first hand, the people of Afghanistan have a lot of hard work ahead of them, and the farmers have the toughest row to hoe.
"I was raised on a farm here in northwest Arkansas," Williams said. "I know farming is a hard lifestyle. It takes dedicated farmers in the United States and Afghanistan to produce the milk, meat and crops that every society needs to succeed."
Williams hopes her mission changed lives because it certainly changed hers.
"Anytime you deploy and you go to a combat zone or just a third world country, you come home with a different appreciation for who you are and what you stand for," she said. "As an American, we are some of the luckiest people in the world."
