Specialized Women's Care: Gynecologic Oncology

By: Scott Marshall
Updated: March 12, 2012
Gynecologic related cancers affect nearly 90,000 women each year with the four most common gynecologic cancers including endometrial, cervical, ovarian and vulvar. That's why HerHealth has a board-certified, fellowship-trained gynecologic oncologist on its healthcare team.

Gynecologic oncology is the study of the female reproductive tract and is considered a subspecialty of obstetrics and gynecology - an example of specialized women's care. The gynecologic oncologist not only treats gynecologic cancers but also preinvasive diseases of these organs such as cervical, vaginal and vulvar dysplasias as well as endometrial hyperplasia.  September is Gynecologic Cancer Awareness Month.

Randall D. Hightower, M.D. specializes in gynecologic oncology-as well as the treatment of gynecologic preinvasive diseases-at HerHealth women's clinic at Washington Regional. An Arkansas native, Dr. Hightower earned his medical degree from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock. He completed his residency at the Naval Medical Center in Portsmouth, Va., and a fellowship at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami.

Dr. Hightower's professional recognitions include:

Outstanding Achievement in Cancer Research by Upjohn
One of  "The Best Doctors in America"
    One of "America's Top Oncologists"

"Experience really mattered to me when I was facing surgery," says patient G.M. "That's why I chose Dr. Hightower. He made me feel very comfortable. He is very professional, positive and encouraging. He addresses a woman's unique physical and emotional concerns with warmth, care and clinical expertise."
