Arkansas Surgeon General in NWA

Updated: April 12, 2012
The Arkansas Surgeon General was in Northwest Arkansas Thursday, to talk about a new Medicare Initiative.

According to Dr. Joe Thompson, this new plan will help doctors better care for patients with chronic diseases and serious illnesses.

Dr. Thompson says it will not cost patients anything out-of-pocket, like a co-pay, because it will be provided through private insurers.

"What this will do is pay the doctor's offices to actually have somebody looking at the coordination of care, looking at what medicines folks are on, looking at what their needs are and when they fall through the cracks, reach out to pull them back."

Just a couple of weeks ago, Dr. Thompson was making headlines for a different reason after being arrested in Little Rock for Disorderly Conduct and Resisting Arrest.

"Two weeks ago, night of the NCAA semi finals, had a couple of incidents at my house that I regret and that had been a distraction, and I apologized to family members, friends, colleagues...I think the public release of the dash-cam gives a little bit different picture of what happened in the police report...But I'm sure as the truth comes out, that'll get resolved."

And while Dr. Thompson says his defense lawyers are handling that situation, he will stay focused on what Governor Beebe has asked him to do and what the citizens of Arkansas need.
