Some Fayetteville elementary students were treated to a special local lunch Wednesday.

As part of the Farm to School Program, the kids at Root Elementary ate a meal made up entirely of food from local farmers.

The non-profit group, Apple Seeds, Inc. helped organize the lunch.

Program coordinator Lucy Kagan said its important to teach children the value of nutrition, while also supporting nearby farms.

"The longer food travels, the earlier it's picked and the more vitamins and minerals will eventually start to decompose and then it also keeps more food dollars here," she said.

The meal consisted of snap peas, salad greens, chicken and strawberries, all from local farms.
