Sewage Spill Creates Mess in Fayetteville

By:
Updated: April 17, 2007
At least two inches of rain proved too much for Fayetteville`s Wastewater System Sunday, when sewage and rain water spewed out of a man hole at the pump station on Old Wire Road. Neighbors called KNWA to complain about the terrible odor and possible health hazard, as the mess flowed into nearby Mud Creek. Fayetteville Water and Wastewater Director David Jurgens says he does not feel there is a real health hazard, but says this is a recurring problem that will be remedied once the $180-million wastewater systems improvement project, that voters approved last week, is complete. The project will focus on upgrading the existing wastewater plant and building a new one on the West side of town. It will also upgrade the collection system and build a new one that will lead to and from the new plant.
