Total employment in Arkansas rose 1,500 to 1,310,900 in August. The number of unemployed Arkansans decreased 1,300 to 72,800. The government sector accounted for more than 50 percent of the monthly improvement. The end of summer break and the subsequent rehiring of the staff needed to meet the demands of the school year resulted in additions to state and local government of 1,900 and 2,500, respectively. Professional and business services had a net gain of 1,800 jobs. The administrative and support services subsector experienced an increase of 1,700. Educational and health services reported a workforce of 148,900, up 1,200. Health care and social assistance was responsible for the advancement. Manufacturing employment figures slipped 300, ending the month at 197,100. Durable goods industries accounted for the drop, as nondurable goods remained steady.
