Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest
No challengers could ketchup to Joey "Jaws" Chestnut and Sonya "The Black Widow" Thomas during the competitive eating competition in Brooklyn. Chestnut downed a record-tying 68 franks and buns in 10 minutes for his sixth win in a row. "The Black Widow" set a new women's world record after downing 45 hot dogs and buns.
Mermaids
According to the United States government, they don't exist! The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, or NOAA, made that announcement, which kind of seems unnecessary. NOAA officials said they started receiving calls following a fictional Animal Planet show called Mermaids: The Body Found

The TV icon makes our list once for the second day in a row. According to TMZ, the former sheriff of Mayberry was laid to rest just a few hours after his death. The 86-year-old died Tuesday morning and was reportedly buried just five hours later.
Higgs Boson
Scientists at the world's biggest atom smasher say they've found the the so-called "God particle". The Higgs Boson is believed to give all matter in the universe its size and shape. The leader of one of the project's two independent research teams says they have data that supports the theory of a god particle, but they have not yet confirmed the new particle is indeed the tiny Higgs Boson. Finding the elusive particle would help explain the origin of mass and increase understanding of how much of the universe works.
Independence Day
It's the day we commemorate the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The Declaration was actually signed July 2nd but congress still had to debate and revise some of the wording and it wasn't approved until July 4th.
