Ozark Man Dies Swimming in Rock Quarry

Johnson County Sheriffs Department says that an Ozark man died on Saturday, July 28 at around 5:00 p.m. while swimming with friends at a private rock quarry on County Road 2171.

Police say that according to witnesses, Leonard Gates, age 63 was swimming when he went under the water and never resurfaced. Gates was pulled from the water and a witness began administering CPR while calling for an ambulance.

Gates was pronounced dead at the scene by Deputy Coroner Ricky Harp.

The Sheriffs Department says that it is unknown if Gates drowned or if a medical condition contributed to his death.

Leonard Gates body has been sent to the Arkansas State Crime Laboratory to determine cause of death.
