Fort Smith police are asking for help to find the person they say severely beat and robbed an 83-year-old man at a car wash Friday morning.

Around 9:24am, an officer was sent to the car wash located at the corner of North 46th and Grand Avenue in reference to a robbery.  He found an employee C. E. Smith, 83, inside a small room at the car wash.

Police say Smith had been in the room when the unidentified person came in, closed the door,  battered and robbed Mr. Smith. He was taken to the hospital with extensive injuries to his face.

Smith is currently listed in serious condition, the name of the hospital is not being released for the safety of the victim and staff.

The person took cash and quarters from a money changer and left in a stolen 2002 Chevrolet truck. The truck was later found abandoned a few blocks away in an alley near North 46th Street and Kinkead Avenue.

The Criminal Investigation Division responded to the scene and took over the investigation.  Anyone with information regarding this heinous crime, or know the identity of the suspect(s), is asked to call the Fort Smith Police Department at (479) 709-5100.
