Child Drowning Risks

A new report by the Consumer Product Safety Commission on in-home drownings from 2006 to 2010 found there were nearly 700 incidents involving children younger than five years old.  434 of those children died.  The drownings took place in products such as bathtubs, bath seats, toilets and buckets.  The CPSC is warning parents and caregivers to protect against drowning risks inside and around the home and to never leave a child alone with water. Drowning is the leading cause of unintentional death among children ages one to four years old.

Student Debt

A record number of Americans are saddled with some kind of student debt.  A study by the pew reserch center found that 22.4 million households or nearly one in five had college debt in 2010. The increase was driven by higher tuition costs as well as rising college enrollment during the economic downturn.  The average outstanding college debt was $26,682 in 2010. The biggest burden fell on the young and poor.

cyPOP

There's a new social network in cyber space.  It's called cyPOP and it made its debut in beta tests this week.  cyPOP connects people through their common interests, rather than through circles of friends and family.  It features user created cafes for topics such as yoga and makeup, to guitar talk and home brews. It's just one of several new specialized social networks looking to edge into Facebook's customer base of more than 950 million users.

Best Chains

Zagat has just announced its 2012 fast food survey results. More than 10,500 diners who say they eat at a chain restaurant at least nine times a month voted on everything. Five Guys has the best burgers, Starbucks has the best coffee, and McDonald's has the best fries.  As for top service, top food, and most popular among the mega chains, Wendy's and Subway took the top spots in those categories.
