Unemployment falls one-tenth percent in October

By:
Updated: April 17, 2007
The United States` jobless rate, at 4.4 percent, was down two-tenths of a percentage point from its rate in September. Total employment in Arkansas rose 5,100 to 1,316,600 in October. The number of unemployed Arkansans decreased 1,100 to 70,600. According to DWS Communications Director Kimberly Friedman, this is the third consecutive month that Arkansas` jobless rate has declined. Additional hiring at schools and holiday preparations at retail outlets contributed to the improved jobless rate, she said. Leisure and hospitality experienced a seasonal decline (-2,200) in October, as the demand for recreational and leisure services diminished after the summer months. Manufacturing had the next largest decrease (-600). Most losses were noted in durable goods. Employment in the government sector increased. This gain (+1,900) was attributed to continued hiring at schools for the fall semester. Trade, transportation, and utilities expanded 1,300 to total 250,300 in October. The opening of new retail outlets was partially responsible for the upturn. Retail stores are also hiring additional staff for the holiday shopping season. (Copyright 2006 Newsroom Solutions, LLC)
