Razorbacks fall to Gamecocks in Columbia 38-20

COLUMBIA, S.C. - The Arkansas Razorbacks fell to the South Carolina Gamecocks 38-20 on Saturday in front of 78,722 fans at Williams-Brice Stadium. During the game, quarterback Tyler Wilson became Arkansas' career leader in completions, while wide receiver Cobi Hamilton became UA's single season leader in receiving yards.

Wilson led Arkansas through the air, as he went 26-for-41 with 277 yards and two touchdowns. His 22 yard pass to Alex Voelzke in the third quarter was his 529th completion of his career, moving him past Clint Stoerner for first on the UA all-time completions list.

Jonathan Williams led the Razorbacks on the ground, recording 61 rushing yards. Dennis Johnson also added 41 rushing yards, and moved into second place all-time on UA's all-purpose yardage list, passing Felix Jones.

Hamilton became UA's all single season receiving yards leader by breaking the mark of 1,117 yards set last year by Jarius Wright with his 31-yard reception in the second quarter. Hamilton was Arkansas' leading receiver, finishing the game with four catches for 72 yards, and now has 1,149 receiving yards on the season.

Defensively, freshman Otha Peters led the Razorbacks with eight tackles, while Trey Flowers had six tackles and 2.5 tackles for loss. Sophomore Tevin Mitchel recorded his first career interception, picking off Connor Shaw in the end zone in the fourth quarter.

South Carolina got on the board first, when Jerell Adams caught a 29 yard touchdown from Shaw. The score came with 5:47 left in the opening quarter and gave the Gamecocks a 7-0 lead.

In the second quarter, Arkansas tied the score at seven. Wilson hit Hamilton for a 27 yard completion, followed by a 20 completion to Julian Horton to get into the red zone. On third down, Wilson fired a six yard touchdown strike to Keon Hatcher, the first touchdown reception of Hatcher's career. The catch came at 8:12 of the second quarter.

The Gamecocks would respond on their next drive. On third down quarterback Connor Shaw scrambled for a ten yard touchdown run at 5:28 of the second quarter to take a 14-7 lead.

Following Hamilton's record setting 31-yard catch, Wilson hit Julian Horton for 23 yards and Mekale McKay for 18 yards to move into South Carolina territory. The Razorbacks would add a field goal, with Zach Hocker kicking a 20-yarder at 3:28 of the second quarter. The score gave Hocker the UA record for most career points by a kicker, breaking the previous mark of 280 points by Steve Little.

South Carolina extended their lead to 21-10 with 1:30 left in the second quarter. On fourth down, Shaw hit Bruce Ellington for a 42 yard touchdown pass, and the Gamecocks took a 21-10 lead into halftime.

In the third quarter, the Gamecocks extended their lead. A nine play drive to open the half resulted in a 41 yard field goal to bring the score to 24-10. On the following Arkansas drive, Wilson drove the Razorbacks to South Carolina's 36 yard line, but D.J. Swearinger returned an interception for 69 yards to give the Gamecocks a 31-10 lead with 10:41 remaining in the third quarter.

The Razorbacks drove the field again, with Wilson's record-setting completion to Voelzke's earning a big first down. A 19 yard carry by Jonathan Williams brought the Hogs into the red zone, where Zach Hocker hit a 21-yard field goal to cap a 12 play, 71 yard drive and cut the score to 31-13 with 5:48 left in the third quarter.

The Gamecocks answered again following the Arkansas field goal. South Carolina drove 74 yards in 8 plays and ran in a two yard touchdown, giving the Gamecocks a 38-13 lead with 2:19 left in the third quarter.

Late in the fourth quarter, the Razorbacks added the game's final score. Arkansas drove 58 yards in 8 plays, resulting in a nine yard touchdown reception by Demetrius Wilson with 39 seconds remaining, and making the score 38-20.
