A public hearing is scheduled for Wednesday at 5 - followed by a City Council meeting - on whether to hike sewage rates by 20-percent, and water by 25-percent.
If approved, the minimum residential users bill will increase by $4 a month. The rate increases would affect commercial properties and properties outside the city limits - but not the properties of Northeast Water Association and the Lakeview-Midway Water Association.
Wholesale water company rates were increased by about 13 percent last year.
The rate increases are based on a recommendation from a water and sewer rate analysis by Garver Engineering, with figures based on a 2005 independent audit. The increases are needed because of the rise in operating and equipment expenses and repairs of old lines.
